The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction began in Kochi and as many as 405 players went under the hammer, with Sunrisers Hyderabad making some interesting changes to the retained and released player list in November.
SRH decided to drop skipper Kane Williamson after his poor season last year and they were looking for a candidate to fill the slot. Moreover, after releasing a good chunk of their side, the franchise had INR 42.25 crores in the mini-auction, the most of any team.
The franchise started a bidding war with Rajasthan Royals for Harry Brook as the English youngster was seen picking up the paddles slowly and smoothly. Brook was eventually snapped up by Sunrisers for a whopping INR 13.25. He is now SRH’s most expensive player beating Manish Pandey (INR 11 million in 2018). He also became the most expensive special batter ever sold in a mini auction, surpassing Shimron Hetmyer (INR 7.75 million from Delhi Capitals before the 2020 season).
Mayank Agarwal, who was released by Punjab Kings, is also set to don the Sunrisers outfit this season after being bought for a sum of INR 8.25 crore. Sunrisers faced competition from Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings but managed to secure the Indian opener. The side has players who can help SRH end their trophy drought since 2016. It remains to be seen how they will build a balanced side from the new squad.
