Ram Setu Movie Review: Akshay Kumar stars in this enjoyable action adventure that manages to overcome its shortcomings with a fun story and stunning visuals.

Ram Setu is a throwback to the Hollywood capers of a generation ago when Harrison Ford or Nicholas Cage embarked on a globe-trotting adventure to uncover an ancient archeological mystery. Ram Setu takes this genre and mixes it with Indian history, mythology, and socio-political commentary. The result is a fun minute-long ride that’s as entertaining as it is clichéd. But once you look past the lapses in logic, Ram Setu emerges as a fun popcorn adventure the likes of which Bollywood hasn’t produced in quite some time. Ram Setu is about veteran archaeologist Dr. Aryan Kulshreshtha (Akshay Kumar with long hair and a prominent gray beard), a non-believer tasked with disproving the reality of Ram Setu, the bridge between India and Sri Lanka described in Valmiki. Ramayana. However, they discover that the structure may actually be man-made, suggesting that Lord Ram may be historical after all. The film is the story of how Dr. Aryan avoids obstacles to find the lost trail in search of Ravana’s golden Lanka, with the help of environmentalist Dr. Sandra (Jacqueline Fernandez) and local Lankan guide AP (Satya Dev).

First of all, Ram Setu is pleasant. It’s slick in some parts and quite thrilling in others. This goes to a good story backed by some of the best props used in Hindi cinema this year. The VFX and CGI are indeed questionable as the trailer suggested. The diving suit scenes are almost cartoonish. But what makes up for it are the breathtaking underwater sequences. The way director Abhishek Sharma captured the beauty and majesty of Ram Setu under the Indian Ocean is reminiscent of the BBC Earth documentary Blue Planet.

Ram Setu works best when the protagonists are out on the field, in the center of the action. As Dr. Aryan and his companion’s search for historical evidence for the story of Lord Ram, the viewer is intrigued. But it falters when there’s a lull in the action. We are suddenly starting to notice how people can barge into the Supreme Court of India with “I object my lord” and not get arrested (or shot). We notice that Akshay’s character is the only one who makes any deductions and thinks and everyone else is just along for the ride and hardly contributes. And we also notice small continuity errors like Akshay’s beard turning into stubble in successive scenes and then back again.

Akshay Kumar gets a unique opportunity in this film. His character – Doctor Aryan – is unlike anything he’s done in the recent past. He’s an atheist who needs to get down to business. He looks different, talks different,ly and is conceived much differently than in many of his recent roles. His recent filmography has often been criticized for containing many public service announcements disguised as films. Ram Setu gives him a chance to do something else. What is a Freelancer? It’s sad that the women in the film weren’t even given the freedom to do something different or do anything at all. Jacqueline’s character is reduced to looking good and uttering some scientific term every 20 minutes to justify her place on the “expedition”. Nushrrat Bharuccha is even worse as her character is reduced to a screaming wife who contributes almost nothing to the plot or the other characters. After a fairly strong performance in Janhit Mein Jaari a few months back, this is a disappointment for the actor.

The surprise of the film for me was Pravesh Rana. As the muscle of Nasser’s corrupt businessman, he is the main antagonist of the film. And he plays the part perfectly, bringing enough menace and charm to what is essentially a filler role. Another highlight of the film is Satya Dev. Although his character AP is written as a stereotypical Lankan with a cliche accent, he brings enough charm and humor to his performance to make the role stand out. Between this and The Godfather, the actor seems to be having a pretty good year. She Hulk Season 2 Release Date and Time, Countdown, When Is It Coming Out?

In tone and tenor, Ram Setu is similar to the hit earlier this year – Karthikeya 2. That one was about the quest for the historicity of Lord Krishna and this one is about Lord Rama. The action, pace, and other elements are also similar. But films differ in scale. With its reported budget of ₹150 crores, Ram Setu surpasses the Telugu film, which was reportedly made for ₹30 crores. But perhaps it is good that Ram Setu is being commemorated this year by a successful film from the south.

Ram Setu takes the best of the Indiana Jones and National Treasure school of storytelling and throws in some desi action. Unfortunately, it also brings in Bollywood melodrama.
