Punjab Kings broke the bank to sign England all-rounder Sam Curran for a record INR 18.50 crore in the IPL 2023 mini-auction as he became the most expensive player in IPL history. Punjab Kings entered the bidding after the price crossed INR 11 million and beat Mumbai Indians to the final bid.
As expected, PBKS were the first to bid for their former captain Mayank Agarwal, but were knocked out in a bidding war by Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, they managed to get star Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza at his base price of INR 50k. PBKS also showed keen interest in uncapped pacer Mukesh Kumar but lost out to Delhi Capitals who snapped him up for INR 5.5 crore.
PBKS acquired Chhattisgarh veteran batsman Harpreet Bhatia for INR 40 lakh in an accelerated round. They also bagged the signing of young Karnataka paceman Vidwath Kaverappa along with Indian uncapped cricketers Shiva Singh and Mohit Rath at base prices of INR 20 million each.
Punjab Kings went into the 2023 auction with the second largest purse of INR 32.2 crore as they released nine players including skipper Mayank Agarwal. Before the auction, they had 16 players in their roster including five overseas cricketers. They also released Caribbean all-rounder Odean Smith and needed direct replacements for both Mayank and Odean.
PBKS have their top order lined up with newly appointed captain Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow as openers. Among them are Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Shahrukh Khan and Liam Livingstone in the middle order and the signings of Curran and Raza significantly boost their chances in IPL 2023.
In the bowling department, Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada form a strong pace duo but fall short of quality spinners with Rahul Chahar leading the charge in that department. Raza can offer a good backup spin option, however, it remains to be seen if he will be a first-choice player. Punjab Kings seemed happy with their activities and walked away from the auction with INR 12.20 crores with a 22 player squad for IPL 2023.
PBKS Final Squad for IPL 2023: Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shahrukh Khan, Matthew Short, Prabhsimran Singh, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jitesh Sharma, Raj Bawa, Rishi Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Atharva Taide, Arshdeep Singh, Nathan Singso Ellis, Kagi Rabada, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Sam Curran, Sikanadar Raza, Harpreet Bhatia, Vidwath Kaverappa, Shivam Singh and Mohit Rathe.
