If you are a great observer and can track down small facts in writing, this is a career you can pursue.

What is graphology and how did it interest you?

Kove: Graphology is the science of understanding the human subconscious through handwriting. When I learned about how graphology can help decode their subconscious by understanding their personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc., it made me even more excited. I was interested to understand it better and deeper.

What skills are required to become a professional graphologist?

Kove: To be a professional graphologist, you must first have the ability to observe. The ability to observe small details is important, where one is able to draw conclusions based on the small curves, dots, changes in ink pattern, etc. of one’s writing style. Being able to understand formations is essential. Second, empathy is a key quality one must have when studying graphology. One needs to be empathetic towards the person they are observing in order to understand their life from their perspective, which in turn will help in providing good solutions to that person.

Last but not least, fast calculation is required in graphology because it involves a lot of things and many parameters to calculate. By practicing graphology more often, one can slowly gain speed in calculation. People who are good at math and technical subjects have it easy. Faster learners with problem-solving skills are also ideal for studying graphology.

How does one become a graphologist? Do you think graphology should be taught in universities?

Kove: As a professional graphologist, one has a huge potential to apply science in perspective in one’s business. The first profession one can pursue is to be a teacher of graphology. Teaching people about science, how to understand someone’s thinking through their handwriting, is a lesser-known career path and few are trained to do it. So, one can earn by giving right advice using the science of graphology. Parental counseling is another service that can be used with knowledge of graphology. One can help parents train their children to become better human beings by helping them review their writing style.

Third, one can be a marriage counselor. They can help people get hitched by checking whether each of the two is compatible or not. Graphology can also be used in the recruiting space where they can suggest which talent to pick by analyzing a candidate’s behavior through their handwriting. The performance of employees can also be analyzed in detail, based on the inference of their handwriting.

Like any other science, graphology has the potential to go a long way in application. But, like other uncomfortable sciences, there is a perception that exists around such concepts. There are no definite rules in this science, which makes each different graphology have its own interpretation, each interpreter has its own way of judging things, etc. Unless and until there are fixed ways of doing and saying things, it will be difficult to classify it as a subject of study. Before we do this, a trusted authority must be established and standard methods of analysis must be documented.

Do you believe that in today’s digitally advanced society, where there is less and less writing, graphology still has potential?

Kove: When it comes to career, graphology gives you introspection in understanding your personality and therefore gives a huge boost to your self-awareness. Thanks to this, you can change your behavior that will better shape your career.

Graphology is not only about writing, but about your own writing behavior. It has huge potential to change that. Graphology gives you an awareness of your personality. If you don’t write fairly often, your commitment to everything goes down. To give an example, professionals in the software industry do not engage in writing often, which is why they have little interest in marriage, settling down, other commitments, etc.

Writing never goes out of style. People are fascinated by handmade artifacts. Handwritten letters are in demand in the modern age like never before. Autographs also never go out of style. It’s not just about the ink, but the pressure a person puts into initials says a lot about their personality. The memory remains engraved for years and decades. Even if people don’t write as much, it will always stay in fashion.

What are the practical or real-world applications of this science? Where is graphology mainly used?

Kove: As already mentioned, graphology has a lot of scope if one wants to use the science from a business angle. In the professional sphere, graphology has good applications in forensics, where handwriting is derived for specific writing style, writing pressure, ink used, font size, etc., in cases of forgery and fraud. Some companies that want reliable long-term employees also use it when recruiting candidates. These are the most commonly used cases of graphology.
