Defending champions Gujarat Titans had a strategy to add more depth to their otherwise strong squad as they braced for a successful title run heading into the IPL 2023 mini-auction held in Kochi on Friday, December 23. They traded veteran New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson and Afghanistan shortstop Rahmanullah Gurbaz to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the months leading up to the event.
GT, who finished as the top player in IPL 2022 before defeating Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 1 to claim his maiden IPL crown in the final, came into this year’s mini-auction with a purse of INR 19.25 crore with 10 slots. available which included seven Indian and three overseas players.
Ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, the Hardik Pandya-led side parted ways with the likes of Dominic Drakes, Gurkeerat Singh, Jason Roy and Varun Aaron apart from Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
GT got off to a very good start when they hired New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for INR 2 million. Williamson, who captained SRH last season, was released by the franchise heading into the event. They then roped in West Indian all-rounder Odean Smith for INR 50 crore. Smith was released by the Punjab Kings.
The Gujarat-based franchise then invested in KS Bharat senior wicketkeeper-batsman for INR 1.2 million. They then hired the services of India’s prominent uncapped pacer Shivam Mavi for a sum of INR 6 million. The reigning champions then showed faith in talents like Urvil Patel at his base price of INR 20k.
The Ahmedabad-based franchise further made valuable additions by buying Irish player Joshua Little for INR 4.4 crore and veteran Mohit Sharma for INR 50 crore.
