Amid Arrest Warrant For XXX Web Series, Ekta Kapoor Posted This

Check out Ekta Kapoor’s Instagram post amid the controversy surrounding Alt Balaji’s XXX web series.

Ekta Kapoor has been receiving flak for her web series XXX Uncensored for months now. It is an erotic comedy-drama series that shows different aspects of sexual relationships. XXX Season 1 was released in 2018 on Alt Balaji, while the second season premiered in January 2020. When the show reached a wider audience, people started criticizing Ekta for allegedly insulting soldiers and hurting the sentiments of their family members in the web series.

An arrest warrant was issued against Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor in a court in Begusarai district in Bihar this week. The warrants were issued by Justice Vikas Kumar based on a complaint filed by Shambhu Kumar, an ex-serviceman, who in his complaint said the web series contained several inappropriate scenes involving a soldier’s wife.

Amidst all these controversies, Ekta Kapoor took to her Instagram and posted a role on her profile. Yesterday, she put together some happy pictures of herself with Brahmastra actress Mouni Roy and wished her on her birthday. Ekta wrote in the caption, “Happie bday d astra of all medias !!! Show meeee d mani @imouni old joke but get bigger rocks out of sky bag !happie bday u rocstaaa.”

Birthday girl Mouni Roy replied, “I love you so much.”

Meanwhile, people took a look at Ekta Kapoor in the comments section. User wrote: “suna hai aapka arrest warrant nikla hai.”

Another comment reads: “Ekta Kapoor please chup jao kahi yaa india se bhaag jao bihar Mumbai police ke liye chal chuki hai arrest karne ke liye.”

Meanwhile, Ekta has not spoken about the arrest warrant yet.

The industry has always been divided when it comes to content on OTT platforms. While many celebrated their freedom of speech and expression, some also expressed their displeasure at the excessive use of profanity and eroticism in the name of entertainment.

Are there any rules for OTT?

There is no regulatory board as such when it comes to controlling or managing content streamed on digital platforms.

In 2019, streaming service providers signed a self-regulatory code regarding the regulation or banning of the following types of content:

  • Content that intentionally and maliciously disrespects a national emblem or national flag
  • Any image or story that promotes child pornography
  • Any content that is “maliciously” intended to outrage religious sentiments
  • Content that “intentionally and maliciously” promotes or incites terrorism, and
  • Any content whose display or distribution has been prohibited by law or court

How did Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor get into trouble?

These regulations were followed by a PIL stating that no regulations were imposed on these platforms where digital content is made available to the general public without any form of filter or screening. Now the main question arises – What if the content hurts the sentiments of the viewers? The subject is Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor’s web series XXX, which shows various aspects of sexual relationships.

How it all began?

A former army soldier named Shambhu Kumar filed a complaint saying the show disrespected the national emblem and Hindu gods. According to a PTI report, an arrest warrant has been issued against the mother-daughter duo at a court in Bihar’s Begusarai district. The arrest warrant was issued by Magistrate Vikas Kumar. A complaint was filed back in 2020 stating that the web series had several inappropriate scenes related to a soldier’s wife. The complainant’s lawyer Hrishikesh Pathak reported the news to PTI.

What next?

Ekta and Shobha Kapoor are yet to comment on the matter. But this fiasco only fuels the debate about freedom of speech and expression on digital platforms. And if in the future there would be some regulatory body to manage the same.
